The President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with the President of Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, at the sidelines of the OIC Summit in Astana.
The two leaders underscored boosting up bilateral cooperation and ties.
President Erdoğan said that Afghanistan and Turkey enjoy historical and age-old relations. He welcomed the U.S. Strategy for Afghanistan, reaffirming that Turkey is ready to assist Afghanistan in different fields.
President Erdoğan stated that Turkey supports the Afghan-lead peace process, expressing Turkey’s willingness to contribute to the rapprochement between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
President Ghani thanked President Erdoğan and the Turkish Government for cooperating with Afghanistan in different realms, particularly supporting the Afghan-led peace process. He emphasized strengthening friendly relations and partnership between the two countries.
President Ghani said that the recently unveiled U.S. Strategy for Afghanistan is explicit and comprehensive. He stated that the strategy has created a new opportunity for the region which should be properly and effectively utilized.
President Ghani added that Afghanistan aspires to have good relations with the neighboring countries, articulating that Afghanistan stands ready to initiate multilateral dialogues with Pakistan. He stressed, “The current situation should change and the prevailing opportunities should be employed for pursuing peace and stability.”
President Ghani described terrorism as a menacing threat to the region and world, calling for a collective and earnest fight against this baleful phenomenon.
