President Ghani inaugurates Kandahar Solar Power Plant

President Ashraf Ghani inaugurated a number of projects including Kandahar Airport Road and Solar Power Plant in presence of the local elders and officials.

The president renamed Kandahar International Airport after Ahmad Shah Baba, saying it is an honor to rename this airport after such a historical figure.

He added that he wants the airport to turn into a point of connectivity in the region via which Kandahar products could be sent to the Gulf, European and other countries, stressing that the amount of investment would be maximized threefold as compared to now.

The president also inaugurated the newly-constructed airport road and named it after Late General Raziq, describing him as “Hero of Independence”.

President Ghani issued directives to authorities of Ministry of Urban Development and Land, IDLG and Kandahar Municipality to make necessary arrangements to transform both sides of the road into the development zone.

Having inaugurated the solar power plant and put it into operation, the president praised the private sector for its efforts and partnership to get the plant established.

“The plant generates 30 MW of power, but for what I have in my mind for Kandahar, the city will need hundreds of megawatts of power,” added president Ghani while describing the plant as opening a new chapter towards using technology in power generation in Afghanistan.

President Ghani said that the newly-established power plant would put a positive impact on production and conservation of fruits including pomegranate and grapes in Kandahar.
