The President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani chaired a meeting on the issues pertaining to the upcoming parliamentary and provincial council elections Wednesday evening, Presidential Palace. The preparations for the elections and the progress achieved in this respect figured their meeting.
The meeting primarily revolved around the preparatory steps and measures taken for the elections and was attended by Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, IEC officials, ministers, senior government officials, ambassadors and representatives from the donor community and political parties.
In his presentation to the meeting, chief commissioner Gulla Jan Abdulbaday Sayad talked about transfer of equipment to the provinces as scheduled, coordination between the IEC and the security and civil service institutions, recruitment particularly of women, preparations for voters’ registration, distribution of Tazkira (National Identity Cards), security concerns of the registration centers and the public awareness programs launched by the Commission. He highlighted that the Commission is proceeding with its programs and plans according to the stipulated timeline.
The President lauded the progress made by the Commission. He said, “Our demand and that of the political parties is the timely, countrywide and transparent conduct of the elections according to the timeline announced.”
Dr. Abdullah also praised the progress of the IEC, stressing the need for formulation of a clear mechanism of recruitment for the commission.
