President Ashraf Ghani’s address to the nation on government’s measures to respond corona spread and its consequences

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

My honorable compatriots, sisters and brothers;

May peace be upon you.

My honorable countrymen/women; I wish you well-being and may you stay safe from the corona pandemic at every corner of the country.

At the outset, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all healthcare personnel, who are serving at the frontline of the battle against covid-19 pandemic day and night to protect our countrymen/women. We all appreciate the healthcare staff for their valuable and immense services and commend their honorable families who have nurtured such patriotic sons and daughters and sent them to fulfill their human and Islamic duties by protecting and saving lives of their compatriots at this critical and difficult time. I hope all our fellow citizens honor their services and efforts by following and act in accordance to thehealth instructions.

At the current time, the only effective way to prevent the spread of corona virus is to follow the instructions provided by media and healthcare staff and to stay at home.

While majority of peoples around the world, including us in Afghanistan, are going through harsh circumstances, we must not lose hope. We need to stand with each other during these difficult days and leave no stone unturned to overcome the challenges together.

Sisters and brothers;

The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has adopted certain measures to minimize poverty and destitution, caused by the spread of coronavirus in our country and is determined to put further measures in place.

Our response and measures mainly concentrate on providing services to the most vulnerable groups of our society such as the poor and destitute. We are willing to distribute bread, food items and meet other basic and essential requirements of the vulnerable in collaboration with bakeries in the city, mosques in districts, development councils in rural areas, and other institutions.

In the meantime, a large number of our compatriots will be recruited in several productive and big projects with consideration to observing necessary safety and health requirements such as physical distancing in the workplace.

We are going to provide the details and particulars of theprojects and plans along with their financial sources whether through domestic or foreign capacities within the upcoming days.

Corona is a pandemic disease and broke out all of a sudden, so we were not fully prepared to cope with it beforehand.

Upon its outbreak, the contagion has disrupted ordinary routine in many countries across the globe and left the people distraught. However, we have taken the pandemic serious since its outbreak. Thank God, so far our fatalities have been much lower comparing to other countries.

We strive to put concrete and fundamental measures in place and maintain the current pace to prevent entering to the third stage of the pandemic, which is the catastrophic peak. To achieve this objective, it requires the cooperation of each and every one of you.

I express my heartfelt gratitude to the traders and well-to-do people of my country for their assistance to the poor and vulnerable groups.

I thank the private sector for their generous and unflinchingcooperation in maintaining the prices at a reasonable level and reaching out to thousands of people in various cities of the country.

We are one nation and will relieve this shared pain together.

Long Live Afghanistan
