President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani chaired the meeting of High Council on Land and Water in ARG last night.
President Ghani said that the issue of water needs in-depth discussions. He reiterated development of a comprehensive policy to be used as a reference for water related issues.
The President stressed on preservation and restoration of traditional water networks and considered the latter not only part of the country’s historical and cultural heritage, but also the most efficient distribution system. He said that we need a proper water categorization system.
The President noted that a committee consisting of experts and specialists will be formed to advise the High Council on the technical aspects of water related issues. He reiterated the important role that independent institutions and associations can play in the area of water management.
Calling risk management of floods one of the main goals of the National Unity Government, the President stressed on the development of a comprehensive plan to manage natural disasters such as flooding.
President Ghani added that Afghanistan should have the capability to prevent flood damage by utilizing flood warning systems while insisting that such plans be adjusted based on short, medium and long term goals.
At the end of the meeting, the President welcomed the plan for establishment of a one-stop-shop for land and private sector development and encouraged continuation of discussions in this regard.
